Are You a Procrastinator?

Do you usually turn in your work ahead of time or are you one of those people who usually waits a couple days or so before starting their work? If you usually wait, that’s called procrastination, which is literally the act of putting off your obligations.

As people, we usually tend to put off the things that we don’t exactly want to do as well as the things that are deemed challenging in our own minds. According to an article written by Peter Economy, “We put things off when there is something more challenging at hand. Instead of rising to the challenge and completing the task we have to do, we find smaller, insignificant activities to fill our time-- telling ourselves that we’re getting something done.” Students usually tend to have procrastination worse than others. They tend to put off their work a lot, not realizing the negative impact it could have on their overall grades or even future careers.

Anytime a person waits until the very last minute to finish their tasks they take the risk of not finishing in time to meet their deadlines. “Any time there’s a hard deadline - which is just about always in college courses - you run the risk of missing the deadline if you keep putting off the work. And, with professors unwilling to give extensions except in very special circumstances, you could be setting yourself up for a grade penalty - often as much as one-third to one-half a grade a day - if you’re late getting the work in,” said Lynn and Hyman. Another reason procrastinating is not a good idea is because it almost always leads to “rush jobs.” This means that instead of taking your time to do the work, clean it up, and execute it, because you’re rushing the assignment there’s a high possibility that it’ll turn out sloppy and with plenty of mistakes.

Procrastination not only leads to rush jobs but it also leads to a large amount of stress, you’ll often find yourself a lot more stressed because in the back of your mind you know you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage strategically by waiting to get things done. Procrastination is one of the worst things you could do, especially in a school setting. It slows you down and it impacts you in negative ways. Do not procrastinate. Start and finish your work on time, it works in a much better way!
